Copper Highlights

Metalllics seem to be all the rage these days....fabrics, wallpaper, furniture finishes and all kinds of accessories bring metallic sparkle and bling to home decor.


We've seen high gloss chrome, brushed nickel and oil rubbed bronze, and now burnished gold is taking center stage.  But my heart will always lean to my favorite patina....copper.


I just love copper!  It's rich and warm, and it always ages with grace and panache!
Every chef covets a set of hand-forged copper pans....me too!

This Japanese soaking tub is the ultimate in luxury, don't you think?  (Perhaps we need to bring along a copper step stool so you can actually get in!)

Wanna know how obsessed I am?  This is my kitchen ceiling.  Anaglypta wallpaper, faux painted by me....I needed a neck brace by the time I finished!  But I love it everyday.

Making Lemonade

I've got an install tomorrow.  It's one of those where we're running up to the wire to get everything done, but all the elements have arrived and we're ready to go...


well, now we are.


I've had issues with the art work.  We found a set of two coordinating, abstract giclee prints that were the perfect colors for our projects.  We ordered them weeks ago, and waited and waited, and waited.  You know, it would be nice if you let your customers know that the items have been discontinued!!  But no....we finally called and were given the news.  So on the  hunt we go to find a substitute.  Lo and behold, we find what appears to be the same prints on line.  
Ordered and done.....or so I thought!


The came yesterday, and I hated them.  They were stretched canvas but they were unfinished on the edges and there was no texture at all.  They looked flat and had a varnished shine to them... Did I mention that I hated them.


Here they are.

They just looked a little cheap (which they weren't) and a bit tacky.

I've got an install in 48 hrs....what's a designer to do??

Here's what I did! 

I pulled out my trusty palette knife and my acrylic paints and went to work!

I just followed the basic color way of each print with layers of color  and wrapped the color on to the edges.  I wish they were on a thicker gallery wrap, but I think they're going to work.

Bathroom Makeover

I was going through my picture files of projects that I’ve completed for clients over the last several years, and knowing that everyone likes a good before and after, I thought I’d post one.

The house had been rental property, but the owner was moving back into town and wanted to live in the house.  Needless to say, it had been trashed!  (Never give renters painting rights without approving the colors!) They had destroyed so much of this house…holes in the sheetrock, water leaks unattended….a mess!

The master bathroom was actually a series of little spaces….a dressing area, a closet and the room with the tub and toilet.  I opened up the whole space, reoriented the placement of the plumbing and created a very functional and lovely room.

Here’s what I had to work with.  Look at all the doors!  (What’s behind Door # 1?)  Ug….

Lovely wallpaper behind the mirro….actually, it’s kind of back in style again, isn’t it?  I think it might have been an improvement over the forest green paint!!

Moving the plumbing means digging and lots of mess….yuk!
 
But it was worth it!

She now has a huge walk in shower,

Tons of storage.  There is also a full length mirror between the large custom cabinets.  There was another closet in the bedroom to house hang-up clothes.  The client was pretty much a jeans and t-shirt kind of girl and wasn’t interested in hanging storage in this space.

We created a vanity with lots of mirrors to open up the space.  The shelves have mirrored backs to display a perfume bottle collection.
 
Since the 70’s bathrooms were not known for being spacious and luxurious, I tried to create as much floor space as possible.
Now that’s a transformation huh?

A little zig and a little zag

 It all started with this rug from FLOR….

“Sophistikat” from FLOR

If you’re not familar with FLOR, they sell carpet squares…..really cool ones!  I love this chevron pattern, and if you lay the squares in different directions, you can have a brand new pattern.  And the part that I like is that if Henry (The Big Dog) gets one of them dirty, I can just pop it out and replace it with a clean one!  How cool is that!

Anyway…I digress.

I’ve become smitten with chevron.

Of course, that sends me out in to cyberworld to see other great designs that bridge classic traditional with modern trends.

This floor is so beautiful, and those of you under 40 might even think it’s a brand new look, but this patterns was found in many upscale homes built in the 50’s and 60’s.  What goes around, comes around, and this awesome floor feels right at home in 2011.

Miles Redd

I love to take risks in design, and anything Miles Redd does is great inspiration for me.  This marble tile chevron is crazy! but that’s what separates Miles from the rest of the pack.

This looks like it might be a floor cloth…not sure, but that could be a great way to bring the chevron to the floor without having a permanent installation.  I think this could be fun…..for a little while!

Chevrons don’t have to be relegated to the floor…..moving on up to the wall.

There are tutorials that will show you how to do this paint technique on the wall.  Buy lots of tape and sharpen up your math skills!

It might be easier to hang this amazing wallpaper instead.

I love the statement that this backsplash tile makes.  Paired with rustic neutrals in this kitchen , they are the star of the show.

I think every fabric company has a chevron pattern in their line.  Great for drapery and even upholstery, the chevron pattern always brings energy into a space.
