A Year in the Life of Divine Distractions

Last Saturday was my one year blogging anniversary.  Whoo Hoo!

I didn’t make a big deal about it,  but on later reflection, I decided it needed to be honored in some way.  After all, it’s been pretty life-changing to be a blogger.   My routines have changed….my creativity has skyrocked because of all the inspiration out in blogland….and I’ve made friends with wonderful women that I never would have know otherwise.

One of the behind-the-scenes aspects of blogging is the research and compilation of great inspirational photos.  In the course of this year I’ve probably created a picture file of well over a thousand pictures that I find interesting in some way.

For my first anniversary, I decided to  share some pics that reflect something that I love about design….pictures that in some way show elements that to me, make for lovely spaces.   You’ll probably think I’m schitzophrenic because the design styles are all over the map, but I really do love so many styles that I can’t be nailed down to one (I’m a Libra as if you couldn’t tell !)  I guess if there is one common denominator it’s my love of color, so you won’t see alot of neutrals in the bunch.

I’ve featured some  of these on the blog before, but many I’ve not used before.  I hope you enjoy them as much as I do.

I have a thing for painted furniture.  As an artist, I love to use furniture as a canvas.  I’ve put this talent on the backburner for a while, but I’m thinking it’s time to get back to it.   This pic is motivation to me.

I love saturated color, and I especially love it when it’s used with boldness and abandon!

I love design with a sense of humor and whimsey.  We mustn’t take ourselves seriously all the time.

I love cozy, warm and relaxing spaces.  I love the mountains, so anything that reminds me of a cabin in Colorado speaks to me.    Give me the look of antiquity in the stone work, and I’m there!

I love drama in small spaces.  I believe that the older I get the more I appreciate a little risk-taking…..what are we so afraid of?

I love a bathroom that can accommodate a chaise.  Yes, this room is neutral….I’d probably replace the throw on the chaise with something colorful….maybe even paint the walls another color.  But I love the light and the layout and the fact that you can lounge in the bathroom.

I love velvet and velveteen.  In fact, my very first post was about this lovely textile.  If you’d like to see where it all started, here’s the link to my first post entitled “My Homage to Velvets”.  There are so many things I love about this picture….the velvet tufted headboard in that amazing peacock blue….the subtle damask design on the walls….great color contrast and layering….sleek modern lamps that help to create an eclectic design….sigh…just beautiful!

I love large art…mostly because that’s what I love to paint…and I’m sort of on a botanical trip these days.  I think this is pretty genius to blow up a botanical to such heights.

I misplaced the credit on this….let me know if you know who did this….they should be applauded!

I have a decidedly feminine side….stop laughing, please…..I really do!  And it always draws me to pink….any shade!  And mix it with a gathered bedspread and ruffles, and I’m in a little piece of heaven.

I also love pink’s older sister, coral.  It was my mother’s favorite color and I lived with it in one shade or another for the first 21 years of my life.

I’m so happy to see gold finishes and gilding coming back into fashion because I’ve always loved the warmth of it.  Gilding is fun to do as well, and it always brings a touch of elegance to anything it is on…..even pumpkins, which are also a huge favorite of mine.

Design that elevates the senses through color and balance seems to take my breath away.  I think I remember a gasp the first time I saw this picture.  How beautifully simple and elegant!

…And I could go on.

I hope you’ve found something that inspires you from reading my blog.  I think I’ve discovered things about myself as well.   My goal has always been to showcase lovely design that give my readers the courage to step out and create spaces that they will love.   I hope that’s come across.

Thanks so much for taking this journey with me.  Here’s to many more posts and lots more inspiration.
